Local Scholars Lecture Series: How Emotions and Morality Really Work

About this event

The topic will be How Emotions and Morality Really Work from How the World Really Works

Our speaker will be Arthur Garrison.
Arthur Garrison is a retired communications system engineer who, having lived deeply immersed in three different cultures at different points in his life, became keenly aware of how culture affects our behavior, but more importantly, how so much of our behavior seems to be the same across all cultures. Is it wired in our DNA? He has been a member of Omnilore since the spring of 2024

HOW EMOTIONS AND MORALITY REALLY WORK
In this talk Arthur will introduce you to some of the more interesting concepts that have emerged from the (relatively) new science of evolutionary psychology. We all know that evolution shaped our bodies, but how did it shape our brains and consequently our behaviors? Why are men from Mars and women from Venus? Why do we help each other? Why do we care what others think? Understanding our evolutionary roots can help us be more aware of our impulses and more thoughtful in our moral decisions as we strive for a fairer and more just society.
This talk was originally presented in the Omnilore class "How the World Really Works"
