Greater Good Magazine (a free publication put out by Berkeley) converts scientific studies into practical strategies for creating a better life. Featuring single-page articles with themes such as altruism, compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, mindfulness, and social connection, GGM informs us about research from a variety of disciplines that demonstrate how life can be full of joy and meaning. Did you know that gratitude enhances brain function, that happy caregivers improve longevity for dementia patients, or that empathic joy feels better than selfish joy? GGM shares this sort of good news in every issue and lifts our spirits.

A recent article from GGM tells us that older people can help teenagers engage in “transcendent thinking” by telling teens about their life experiences and sharing lessons learned along the way. Research coming out of USC suggests that the broader perspective that we model when we assess the past encourages teens to take a wider view of their own identities, values, sense of purpose, and potential for future success. This way of looking at life also stimulates brain development in young people toward greater self-awareness and feelings of personal agency.
When you were younger, did you ever benefit from the personal life story of an older person?
